Creator Streamlabs software company accused of copying products from Lightstream, OBS Project
Logitech-possesses Streamlabs, a company that produces digital tools for content creators, is changing the name of one of its flagship offerings after being accused of copying other companies’ products and websites.
On November 16, Streamlabs unveiled Studio Streamlabs, a cloud-based broadcast studio for Tic streamers that play on console. Later that day another business, Lightstream, took to Twitter to highlight not only how similar Streamlabs Studio is to its own core product, Lightstream Studio, but how similar are the websites of the two programs:
Hey, can I copy your homework?

As the screenshots provided by Lightstream show, the websites of Streamlabs Studio and Lightstream Studio are virtually identical in terms of layout and content.
For example, the Lightstream Studio site presents the tool as a way to “Upgrade your Xbox and Playstation streams” because you can “Automatically add overlays, alerts, and other media every time you switch to direct ”.
On the Streamlabs Studio site, it is touted as “a way to upgrade your console streams” because you can “automatically add overlays, alerts, and other media whenever you go live” . The only change to that last sentence is an abandoned Oxford comma.
Lightstream’s claims were enough on their own to put Streamlabs in hot water. Then Lightstream staff intervened. Brandon stennis, who is currently an influencer talent recruiter at Candy but previously worked as a Lightstream Community Manager, provided screenshots of supposed user reviews for Streamlabs Studio which he said were in fact for Lightstream Studio.
“I KNOW because I reached out to the people in reviews for these comments when I was working at @Lightstream! ” he wrote.
Meanwhile, the co-founder and CEO of Lightstream Stu grubbs pointed out that his company is not the only one impacted by Streamlabs:
The team of @streamlabs should be ashamed of himself. Not satisfied enough to ride @OBSProjectis hard work. Now copy ours into the layout and into every word of our marketing site and our UX in this product. https://t.co/Lot2KPh72y

“OBS“means Open broadcast software. OBS Studio is a very popular open source streaming software, free to use (meaning its code is available for anyone to view / use / modify) created by the OBS project, which was founded in 2012 by the developer Hugh “Jim” Bailey.
Streamlabs’ flagship product, streaming software released in 2018, is called Streamlabs OBS. The name is a registered trademark.
One problem: Streamlabs is not affiliated with the OBS project.
“Near the launch of SLOBS, @streamlabs contacted us to use the name OBS. We kindly asked them not to do it, ”the OBS Project tweeted after being tagged in calls about the Lightstream situation. “They did it anyway and followed by filing a trademark[.] We tried to resolve this issue privately and they were uncooperative at all times. “
We are often faced with confused users and even businesses who do not understand the difference between the two applications.
Support volunteers sometimes run into angry users asking for refunds. We had interactions with several companies who were unaware that our applications were separate.

Following the OBS project tweets, Streamlabs announced that it would take “immediate action” to remove OBS from its product name.
“Streamlabs OBS is built on the open source OBS platform; Streamlabs OBS is also open source and our code is publicly available, ”he said. in a statement posted on Twitter. “We take responsibility for our actions and will support the community. “
Streamlabs does not appear to have responded to Lightstream’s allegations or Chain world, another company, which says Streamlabs has contacted its cryptocurrency donation service, asking to collaborate, “Only then to take everything that has been discussed and do it themselves as “pioneers”.“
Leading banners Pokimane and Hasan Abi both tweeted that they would stop using Streamlabs’ tools and services if the company did not respond to the allegations. HasanAbi specifically pointed out OBS Project tweets, while Pokimane said she wanted to see Streamlabs “solve all this thread of problems, ”Or she will ask them to withdraw her approval from their platform and use another donation service.
