HARYANA, 9th August: CMD NHPC AK Singh has launched Internet cloud-based software application for Early Warning System (EWS) at NHPC Corprate office, Faridabad.
YK Chaubey, Director (Technical), RP Goyal, Director (Finance) and senior managers from regional offices, power station, projects and units of NHPC also participated in the program via video conference.
The software will enable close monitoring of water levels/flow of tributaries/rivers as well as close coordination with the project/power plant upstream and downstream of these identified vulnerable projects in real time. It should further issue alerts/warnings to project authorities/affected stakeholders and local administration to allow time for people to react during flooding, allowing local administration and people to evacuate or s shelter before a flood.
A natural calamity took place in February 2021 in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, where few hydropower projects were also badly damaged and there was great loss of life and property. The Ministry of Energy (MoP) then formed a committee for short and long term weather forecasts and SAPs to be put in place in these vulnerable projects.
Subsequently, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) identified 47 vulnerable projects across the country, which are generally located above an altitude of 1500 m EL or those which are first in the basin. Of these, 10 are owned by NHPC Limited and 2 are owned by CVPPPL (a joint venture between NHPC and JKSPDC). In accordance with the directives issued by the CEA/MoP, these projects were directed towards the implementation of an SAP.
NHPC has also been entrusted with the responsibility of setting up a master control room to monitor the operation of the SAPs of these vulnerable hydro projects in the country belonging to the public/state/private sector. The software application has been integrated with Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) inputs in real time to strengthen forecasts/alerts. Currently, all projects associated with NHPC and CVPPPL have been configured with this application and benefit from it. Hydropower projects owned by other developers will also be able to take advantage of this software portal in the future.
