Fast-growing ESG software company names its first GC
Sphera, a major player in the growing field of helping companies manage ESG risks, has hired Michelle Beckers as its first general counsel.
As the company’s top lawyer, Beckers will refine Sphera’s legal strategy to support the company’s expansion, which has more than 3,000 clients in more than 100 countries.
The lawyer began her new role this week, a company spokesperson confirmed on Friday.
“It is an exciting time to join Sphera as more and more companies around the world seek innovative and reliable ESG solutions,” Beckers said in a statement.
“The global market is complex with varying regulatory requirements across different geographic regions. I look forward to supporting Sphera’s continued expansion in the ESG sector and leveraging my expertise in complex contract negotiations and regulatory compliance.
Founded in 2016, the company provides software, data and advice that helps clients manage and mitigate ESG risks in the areas of environment, health, safety and sustainability.
Beckers joins Chicago-based Sphera after serving as an associate general counsel for Progress, which provides software for the development of business applications. Prior to Progress, Beckers held legal positions at marketing firm InnerWorkings as well as software support firm Rimini Street.
In September, private equity funds managed by investment management firm Blackstone acquired Sphera for $ 1.4 billion. Sphera was previously owned by private equity firm Genstar Capital.
Explaining the deal in July, Eli Nagler, Senior Managing Director of Blackstone, said: “The growing importance of environmental, social and governance issues to businesses around the world is a key thematic investment objective for Blackstone.
“Sphera has established itself as a market leader in ESG software and solutions, and we are delighted to partner with [CEO Paul Marushka] and this world-class leadership team to continue to accelerate their impressive growth trajectory, ”Nagler added.
